Floods Wreak Havoc in Australia
ANCHOR: Heavy rains are coming down in Australia today. Six people have been rescued from rising floodwaters in the country's northeast after flash flooding hit the region. STORY: Brisbane received 70 millimeters of rain throughout the day. Cars there were brought to a standstill as floodwaters caused traffic jams in the central business district. 150 millimeters of rain fell in the Sunshine Coast, north of Brisbane overnight, and many homes and businesses were flooded. The rain caused several vehicle crashes. Two truck drivers were lucky to be alive after their vehicle was hit by a tree and collided head-on with another car. [Sr. Sgt. Mal Scott, Queensland Police Officer]: "There wasn't much he could do, he just had to basically plough into the large tree, he basically ripped the front of his truck off and he collided with the other truck." Four female Dutch backpackers were also rescued from the roof of their car near Noosa, after water started to seep into the car and forced them to climb out of the windows. [Dutch Tourtist, Noosa]: (DO NOT TITLE BAR) "We've seen many water on the roads and stuff so we thought we can get this, yeah we can get through and suddenly all the water was starting to come in the car and it was getting higher and higher and then we wanted to reverse, at that point we started to float." The women escaped injury but only had enough time to retrieve their passports and bikinis from the car before it became submerged. Emergency Service workers have received more than 300 calls for help. Roads are also being sandbagged to avoid further flooding.

Lynda Benglis, Louise Bourgeois CIRCA 70 at CHEIM & READ
James Kalm sneaks in at the end of the opening for this historical show. Between them, Bourgeois and Benglis encompass the foundations of modern Feminist sculpture. Each derives a unique yet shared sense of form from rich sources that include the erotic, the phallic, and the organic. Bourgeois received her initial attention for work that was a personal response to Surrealism and has at the age of 96, become an example of artistic perseverance. Benglis was a founding member of Feminist Art, who nevertheless challenged its tenants and provoked controversy that raised consciousness concerning feminine issues.

Cua Dai River Operations 1969-70
. On September 27, 1967 Operation Green Wave was initiated with Task Force 116 Patrol Boat River (PBR) vessels in an attempt to control the Cua Dai River in I Corps. However, this force encountered such fierce resistance from the VC around Hoi An, that just ten days later the operation was cancelled by its commander and the PBRs were sent back to the Mekong Delta. The river in this free ranging enemy territory remained such a hostile waterway that it was considered totally unassailable by commanders for the next year and a half This situation changed dramaticlly as SEALORDS operations entered its second, or pacification, phase in early 1969. Acording to an article in the Stars & Stripes at the time: "Long a Viet Cong stronghold, the Cua Dai River area has been greatly pacified since early spring when VNN vessels and US Navy Swift Boats began regular patrols in the area. LT R.L. Andretta of Wheaton MD, the Senior Advisor, Coastal Group 14, says "We generally used to have an operation once a week around here, by inserting troops on the southern river bank to harass the VC." The base itself frequently received fire from that shore, and there had been a few attempts at ground attacks on the base from the nearby village of Doi." "These days however, 'Ambush Alley,' as the river was called, is often navigated without incident, although firefights are still a probability after dark. One former VC hideout is now a training center for Vietnamese Regional Forces. And further up the river, at Xuyen Long, a refugee camp has been built, primarily housing displaced Vietnamese civilians. Construction has already begun at the village's location which will soon replace the huts that are now used as homes for the refugees. As to the future of Coastal Group 14, LT Andretta says "I think when I leave here next February, I will be able to water ski anywhere on the Cua Dai whenever I please" This video depicts this success story of pacification by USN and Vietnamese forces that resulted in a dramatic turn around for the people of the surrounding area of Hoi Anh .
